What do I need for an electronic workshop?
You'll need access to a computer with Internet capabilities. You'll need
Internet search skills and basic computer skills. Word processing skills will
help you a lot in completing some of the assignments. Self-discipline to
complete the assignments on your own is essential. Other than that, you'll use
e-mail, mail, or fax to submit your assignments.
-
How do I know if an online course is right for me? Electronic
training is not for everyone. Some people simply work best in a group with a
definite time commitment. Some prefer the interactions with others and like the
social aspect of more typical training sessions. Other people, however, like
the convenience of being able to learn when and where they want.
The electronic courses were designed for those looking for alternative
ways to get their required licensing training hours and who are experienced in
the field. If you have the computer skills and the self-discipline to work
without an externally set time commitment, then an online course will likely
work for you.
If you prefer the interactions of other adults, consider getting several others
to enroll with you. Then you can discuss the activities with a partner or in a
group and support each other in completing the work.
-
How do I register?
Just select the topic that interests you, print out the registration form, and
mail it with a check to NSU Child and Family Network at the address on the
form. You'll receive an access code and more information to help you get
started.
-
How long does it take to complete an electronic workshop?
That depends on you. You will have articles to read and some exercises and
assignments. Since you receive 3, 4, or 6-hours credit, the articles,
assignments, and test are designed to take you at least 3, 4, or 6 hours. Of
course, some individuals may take longer. You may progress at your own rate,
but we prefer that you complete the work within two weeks.
-
What is the assessment like?
The assessment is mostly true and false and multiple choice questions about the
content in the articles. It should take you no more than 20 minutes to
complete. You will take it online. There is a short sample test for you to take
first as practice to be familiar with the process.
-
Can I get all of my required clock hours in electronic workshops?
We don't recommend it. Online workshops are designed to supplement, not
replace, more typical training opportunities. Online workshops are developed to
address specific needs when they are needed-needs that likely cannot wait for a
scheduled workshop. Consequently, you will see that the topics offered are
those that deal with issues that are of an immediate concern to a caregiver or
director faced with the problem. We'll help you find out what you need to know
when you need to know it!
-
I need CEU's to renew my CDA? Will this count?
Electronic courses cannot be used for CDA CEUs at this time.
-
Can several of us at the same site work together?
Yes, and we encourage you to discuss the assignments with each other. Each
person must pay the fee, submit all assignments, and pass the assessment to get
credit for the training.
-
What topics are available?
New topics will be available as they are created. You will find a growing list
of topics on the main page for Electronic Workshops.
-
What if I have computer trouble?
To a limited degree, we will help you by making computers available in our
office or in the computer lab if your are in Shreveport or Alexandria. We can
help you get started and show you how the training is set up. Also, many
libraries now have Internet access.
-
What if I can't figure out how to do the electronic course?
Call NSU Child and Family Network and we will talk you through it. You should
be sitting at your computer when you call. If it will take more than a brief
answer, we'll make an appointment with you for technical assistance.
-
What if I still need more information after I take the electronic
training?
Many courses include resources for further information. You will also
explore Internet sites as a part of the course. If you still need more
information, you will have found many other sources of help.
-
This is my first electronic workshop. Can you give me some tips?
-
Set your own deadline for completion. Decide when you want to be finished.
-
Set a goal of how much time you can commit each day and stick with it.
-
Review all the material in your course first to be familiar with the set up and
where information is located. Read through the assignments and preview the
articles and exercises to understand the full scope of the electronic
course.
